Reminder! There is no school for students tomorrow, February 14, due to a Faculty In-Service Day, and there is no school on Monday, February 17, for Presidents' Day. Enjoy the long weekend, and we will see everyone back on campus on Tuesday. | The Lower School is celebrating Book Week from February 24 - 28. There are lots of fun literacy-themed activities planned, and I can't wait to see our students share their love of reading! We will have Book Character Day on Friday, February 28. The first-floor classrooms (Grades LP - 1) will have a parade, and parents of those students are invited to watch at 8:15 a.m. in the lower school courtyard. Please check your child's online homeroom bulletin board for details on the dress-down day. | As of next school year, in grades 2 through 5, the navy skirt will be retired; the girls will wear plaid skirts and skorts only. All other uniform options for these grades remain the same.
For girls in Pre-K 4, Kindergarten, and first grade, the jumper and Peter Pan shirt will be retired from the uniform catalog. The Lands’ End Mesh Polo Dress with logo (navy or blue) remains a uniform option for these grades. Girls in grades Pre-K 4 through first grade can now also wear the Lands’ End Plaid Box Pleat Skirt or Skort to the top of the knee or Plaid Side Pleat Skort above the knee. The skort and skirt will be worn with the Lands’ End Polo Shirt, either the Rapid Dry Active, Mesh, or Interlock, short or long sleeve in white or navy with the logo. | Receive 20% off most School Uniform styles and 60% off select School Uniform Sale at Lands' End through February 14. Visit www.landsend.com/myschool and use code DRAW and pin 3450 to receive the discounts. | The kindergarteners used their reading superpowers to read and act out a script! The students practiced reading their scripts with a partner, using their bodies and faces to demonstrate the character's actions and feelings. Each partnership presented their performance to the class, adding personal touches that made their performance unique. The students did a fantastic job reading the scripts fluently and with expression! | PK4 students engage in a variety of outdoor activities that support their gross motor development and overall growth. Riding bikes helps strengthen their leg muscles, improve balance, and enhance coordination. Building with large foam blocks encourages teamwork, spatial awareness, and problem-solving skills while also refining their motor control. The water table provides a fun, sensory-rich experience where children practice hand-eye coordination, pouring, and grasping skills. These activities foster independence, creativity, and physical development, all essential for four-year-old learning and exploration. | Kindergarteners celebrated the 100th Day of School! They began their day with a parade dressed up as 100-year-olds. Then, throughout the day, students counted to 100 and made necklaces with Froot Loops, wrote about what they would do with $100, and completed a project on things they wanted to do before they were 100 years old. | On February 5, second grade took a virtual field trip to Plimoth Patuxet Museum in Massachusetts! An experienced museum educator shared details on what a day in the life of a Wampanoag looked like through reproduction artifacts and animal furs. Students were able to ask questions at the end and we all walked away with some great new knowledge and insight into Native American history! | Fourth graders created a bold and colorful heart artwork inspired by Brazilian pop artist, Romero Britto. | Second graders in Mrs. Lawrence's class were happy to work on this collaborative heart artwork inspired by British street artist, James Goldcrown. | This week, our Little Pirates got a chance to combine their learning across multiple subjects in a fun and creative way! We tied together our letter of the week, handwriting practice, and geometry unit in math by making robots. Little Pirates got to cut out colorful shapes and used these shapes to create their own unique robots, reinforcing the geometric concepts of shapes and sizes. In addition to practicing shapes, our theme was all about the letter "R"! The students had been learning what sound the letter "R" makes (robot, of course!) and had been practicing how to write the letter "R." As they assembled their robots, they reinforced the connection between the sound, shape, and letter, making learning both hands-on and fun! | As part of our Ecosystem Restoration unit, students are stepping into the role of ecologists to investigate why certain organisms in a section of the Costa Rican rainforest are struggling to grow and thrive. Today, they examined two different soil samples, making observations and identifying the organic and inorganic components of each. They documented their findings on Seesaw. The challenge was to determine which soil sample represents a healthy ecosystem and which one indicates an unhealthy environment. This insight will help students propose actions for a restoration plan. Later in the year, they’ll apply their new knowledge to explore and restore our own Indian River Lagoon ecosystem. You can click on this link to get a glimpse into the science lab. | In their study of magnetism, fourth-grade students have engaged in various hands-on activities and investigations. Through experiments with different magnets, they discovered that like poles repel while unlike poles attract. Using special viewers, students explored magnetic fields and learned that magnetism can pass through various materials. They also tested the strength of magnets by measuring the distance a paperclip would jump to a magnet. Students applied their understanding by investigating three magnetic toys, analyzing them with paper clips, and making scientific inferences and explanations. This unit will culminate in an exciting project where students will design, build, and test their own magnetic toys. Be sure to watch future newsletters for this fun-filled project!
